Pathogen Screening Policy: Cell Lines, Tumors, and Rodent-Derived Materials

1. Regulatory Compliance and Approval
In accordance with University Regulations, laboratory animals may only enter or be transferred within CUHK with the prior approval of the Director of LASEC.
Important: The use of unauthorized animals or biological materials that lead to a disease outbreak constitutes a major non-compliance of University Regulations [1].
Restricted Items
The following items are prohibited from entering CUHK animal facilities without explicit prior approval:
  • Animals: Both living and deceased.
  • Biological Samples: Body parts, organs, tissues, or fluids (including but not limited to whole blood, serum, plasma, and urine).
  • Research Materials: Tumors or cell lines.
  • Contaminated Items: Equipment, clothing (including lab coats), or other materials that have had contact with animals not sourced from LASEC.

2. Risk Mitigation and Standards
The risks associated with cell lines and tumors, along with recommendations for pathogen screening, are detailed in the Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals [2]. This text serves as the definitive reference for research animal studies and is the mandatory standard for AAALAC accreditation.

3. LASEC Pathogen Screening Program
To support researchers, LASEC provides assistance with testing and sample submission. By coordinating and batching shipments, we can significantly reduce individual shipping costs.
  • Confidentiality: All test results will remain anonymous and confidential.
  • Application: If you wish to participate in this coordinated program, please submit your request via the link below:
Application for Pathogen Screening
Testing Profile: Cerberus Sciences "CL-M-3"
Samples are submitted to Cerberus Sciences for screening using the CL-M-3 profile. This panel is specifically selected because it aligns with our current animal health monitoring protocols. It tests for:
Category Pathogens Tested
Viruses/Bacteria Mycoplasma spp., MHV, MPV, MVM, TMEV, MCMV, SEND, LCMV, MNV, ROTA, LDEV, POLY, REO 3, and ECT.

4. Cost Structure
The program is designed to be cost-effective through shared logistics:
  • Test Fee: AUD 375 (~HKD 2,200) per sample.
  • Shipping Fee: A flat rate of ~HKD 15,000 for dry ice shipping (covers up to 50 samples).
  • Cost Sharing: The HKD 15,000 shipping fee will be divided proportionally among all participants in a scheduled batch.
